On 26–27 September 2025, the European Parliament in Brussels will host Multilingualism Day 2025 under the topic “Multilingualism: Past, Present, Future”, celebrating Europe’s rich linguistic diversity and the crucial role of translation and interpretation in democracy, participation, and inclusion.
This year’s programme also explores how artificial intelligence and new technologies are transforming translation and interpretation. Workshops such as “Behind the hype: separating AI fiction from translation reality” and sessions on automated translation highlight the opportunities and nuances of innovation in multilingual communication.
Multilingualism is not only a cultural cornerstone of the European Union, but also a driver of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially quality education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), and inclusive institutions (SDG 16). Such discussions and events show how digital tools can advance inclusion, accessibility, and democratic participation, while raising important questions about ethics, quality, and the human role in communication.
