In June 2026, our team successfully organised a multi-day joint international field trip to Belgrade, Serbia, from 2 to 5 June 2026. As a non-EU country in the Western Balkans strongly influenced by EU official and public diplomacy, Serbia provided an important context for exploring the impact of Agenda 2030 on neighbouring regions and the role of EU public diplomacy. The field trip brought together students, researchers, and external stakeholders and gave participants valuable first-hand insight into the practical implementation of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs, as well as the European Union’s role in supporting sustainable development, institutional cooperation, and regional transformation beyond its borders.

During the field trip, we visited several key international, diplomatic, and development-oriented institutions. At the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, participants gained a deeper understanding of the EU’s role in Serbia’s accession process, public diplomacy, and the promotion of EU values and interests. At the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Serbia, we learned about the implementation of the SDGs in Serbia, including UNDP’s strategic approach and key priorities. At the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Belgrade, we explored bilateral relations between Slovenia and Serbia and diplomatic cooperation, and the importance of EU enlargement for regional stability and development. At the Regional Agency for Development and European Integration Belgrade (RADEI), we examined how regional development, EU-funded projects, entrepreneurship, SME support, innovation, and cooperation among public, private, and civil society actors contribute to Serbia’s European integration process.

The field trip demonstrated how institutions, networks, and policy frameworks shape the implementation of Agenda 2030 in practice, especially in the context of EU global leadership and cooperation with third countries. Connecting participants directly with professionals working in diplomacy, development, regional policy, and international cooperation helped bridge academic knowledge and practical experience.

Stay tuned to learn more about the upcoming results of the TIA2030 project!
